How CertAdvisor answers questions

Question of the week

1) I am an MCSE (NT), who is preparing to upgrade to MCSE 2000. Now that
Miscrosoft has announced XP and .Net server exams, will I have to pass
those exams also to keep my certification current? Please advise, as I am
confused.
(From Michael Germer)

ANS) Microsoft has made it clear that W2K MCSEs would not be required to
take any of XP and .Net server exams, to stay current. So the new exams
will not affect your plans in any way. When all the XP and .Net server
exams become available, MCSE candidates would 'have the option to complete
their certifications with either four Windows 2000 or four Windows XP
Professional/Windows.NET Server exams or a combination of both for a total
of four core operating system exams.'

Q2) I found that CIW offers training for its certification exams. Are
these courses mandatory? (From Raj)

ANS) No, CIW expects candidates to take the training or have the knowledge
equivalent to what is being imparted by its courses. If you think you are
qualified you can sit for the exams right away without taking any of the
courses.

Q3) How useful are the vendor neutral certificates? (From tech_angel72)

ANS) Vendor neutral certificates equip candidates with a broad level of
understanding of the subjects they wish to build their career in. They are
typically useful at the entry and middle levels of certification. After
that if candidates wish they can pursue a specialized and advanced
vendor-specific certification in their line of technology. In a Gartner
report 59% of the IT managers interviewed felt that vendor-neutral
certifications were needed.

Q4) How many questions are there in Cisco exam 640-507, Cisco Certified
Network Associate 2.0. Exam? What is the passing score? (From Sadiq
Hussain)

ANS) Exam 640-507 has 65 questions, which have to be answered in 75
minutes. The passing score is 849.

Adeel Hussain responds to Sam Stewarts article about exam preps.

"When studying for a certification exam an individual should study the
subject of the exam (be it an O.S., software package, etc.).  If you study
the exam preps then you will only learn the answers to those preps.  Exam
preps can be a very useful tool to verify your knowledge of a subject and
your readiness for the exam.   However, the preps should be among the last
study tools you use.  If you use the exam preps too early or too often you
risk memorizing the answers to the questions (which will not help you in
the exam or the real world).  When you do start using the exam preps it is
beneficial to review your exams to identify weak points in your knowledge
so you can review those topics using your other study tools. In
conclusion, "Mastering" the exam preps will only prepare you for the exam
preps, study of the topic will prepare you for life."
