Question of the week

1) I am looking for an entry-level help desk job. Are there any
certificates available for help desk professionals? Would getting any of
these help? (From Anita Rogge)

ANS) Help Desk Institute offers a vendor neutral certification program for
help desk professionals. This program is offered at three levels:

Certified Help Desk Analyst (HDA)
For entry-level help desk professionals with little or no job experience

Certified Help Desk Support Engineer (HDSE)
For experienced support engineers with nine to 18 months experience

Certified Help Desk Manager (HDM)
For those with three to seven years of experience in the service and
support industry

Getting certified would be useful especially for IT professionals looking
for entry-level jobs. As beginners typically lack in experience, passing a
certification program would add weight to their resume and improve their
chances of landing a job.

Q2) You mentioned that the MCP+Site Building certification retired with
the 70-055 Frontpage 98 exam. I just got my MCP+Site Building
certification yesterday when I passed my Visual Interdev exam last week.
Here is the link to Microsoft's web site that clearly states that the
MCP+Site Building certification retires on June 30, 2002.

equirements&SubSite=cert/mcpsb&AnnMenu=mcpsb
Please get your information correct before you send E-mail. (From Michael
Smith)

ANS) The MCP+Site Building certification did retire with the FrontPage
exam on June 30, 2001. If you are already certified or got certified
recently by passing an exam other than FrontPage, your certification will
be valid until June 30, 2002.

When Microsoft retires a certification, you can no longer take exams that
are retired (and part of that certification). The certification itself is
usually valid for one year past the retirement date. In your case, you had
already passed the FrontPage exam before June 30th. Hence the email we
sent out did not apply to your case.

Q3) How many questions will be there after A+ exams revert to adaptive
format? (From Mike Lansing)

ANS) There could be reportedly between 20-30 questions per exam after A+
exams revert to adaptive format.

Q4) I want to get certified in Oracle DBA. As I am new to IT I want to
start with the DBO exam. If I pass the DBO exam will I get any credit
towards the DBA track? (J.Wilson)

ANS) No. Passing the DBO exam will not earn you any credit towards DBA
track. But as you are new to IT DBO would be a good starting point for
you.

'Curtis' says Mr. Fey could have planned his certification training
better.

"Why do many of us often forget that certificates were originally meant to
acknowledge existing expertise than as tools to acquire the new skill
sets?  Most recruiters instinctively reject any certification claim unless
backed by experience.  I think Mr. Fey would have been in a better
situation if he had started working after he achieved his first premium
certification. With the same effort he put on getting other certifications
he could have definitely found a suitable job and then continued his
certification training.  Anyway for someone who entered IT 'late', he has
achieved a lot. He only has to keep his eyes on the ball and keep running
till he scores a goal."
